Webinar on International Criminal Court

On June 20, 2024 Rights Center held a webinar on the International Criminal Court for regional lawyers. The main intervener was Mr. Sergey Golubok who holds a Master’s degree in International Human Rights Law from the University of Essex, United Kingdom. Mr. Golubok is a member of the St. Petersburg Bar Association and the Bar Association of the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

In 2022, as a legal advisor to a protected witness, he appeared at the International Criminal Court within the framework of one of the cases under investigation. During the webinar he provided information on ICC case initiation with examples.

The webinar included discussions on specific cases, such as those involving Ukraine and Georgia, which illustrated the processes by which cases are brought before the ICC. The webinar emphasized the necessity of initiating investigations within the ICC and highlighted the importance of national investigations before any international intervention occurs. Victim participation was also a key focus. The webinar provided examples, such as the case in South Africa and the 2008 South Ossetia conflict. The principle of complementarity was also discussed.
