In 2024, Rights Centre NGO submitted a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) regarding violations of the right to freedom of conscience (Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights) and the right to a fair trial (Article 6.1 of the Convention).

The case concerns Baptist conscientious objector Davit Nazaretyan, whose request for alternative military service was denied by the Alternative Service Commission and subsequently upheld by the courts. Nazaretyan asserts that his religious beliefs prevent him from bearing arms; however, he is willing to serve in the military in non-combat roles or perform civilian alternative service.

The ECtHR has accepted the complaint for review.
