Discussion on the Conduct of Gender-Sensitive Court Proceedings

On 5 September 2025, Rights Centre NGO conducted a discussion concerning the gender-sensitive court proceedings. Rights Centre is in the process of developing a training manual for the trainees of the Justice Academy, with the objective of providing guidance on addressing gender-sensitive issues arising in criminal, civil, and administrative proceedings. The aim of the meeting was to identify, through a multidisciplinary exchange of views, the challenges and recommendations to be incorporated into the manual, in order to ensure its comprehensiveness and practical applicability. The event was opened with introductory remarks by the co-founders of Rights Centre NGO, Anna Maralyan and Tatevik Gharibyan, as well as by Kristine Mkhitaryan, representative of the OxYGen Foundation. The authors of the manual- judge of the Court of Cassation Liza Grigoryan, lawyer, PhD Narine Aleksanyan, judicial expert and psychologist Ani Vardanyan, and international law specialist Anna Maralyan presented the thematic areas envisaged for inclusion in the manual. A substantive and wide-ranging discussion took place, with the participation of judges, attorneys, experts, and representatives of civil society organizations. The participants addressed the challenges and approaches arising in the adjudication of domestic violence cases in judicial practice, and formulated recommendations. The sub-grant project “Improving the Judicial Response to Gender-Based and Domestic Violence Cases in Armenia” is implemented by the Rights Center NGO within the framework of the “EQUAL-EU 4 Women Empowerment” project. The project is implemented by the OxYGen Foundation, the European Partnership for Democracy NGO, the Netherlands Helsinki Committee NGO, the Women’s Support Center NGO, the WINNET Goris Development Foundation, in cooperation with the Winnet Sweden NGO. The project is funded by the EU.
